Not long after, Smirthi moved from Cary, NC, to Washington, DC—coincidentally where Aalap lived. After about a month in her new city, Smirthi gently hinted that she’d be open to something more than friendship, and soon after, they had their very first date. On April 10, 2021, they shared a sweet picnic in front of the Washington Monument, sipping red wine and soaking in the spring air. The night ended with pizza, laughter, and the unmistakable feeling that something truly special had begun.
Aalap chose the romantic and iconic Jefferson Memorial as the site for his proposal. Despite the wind and rain brought on by Hurricane Ian, he got down on one knee surrounded by the people who meant the most to them. Family and friends gathered in the pouring rain to surprise Smirthi moments after she said “yes.” It was emotional, unforgettable, and perfectly them.
From the beginning, Smirthi and Aalap knew they wanted a wedding that felt traditional, elegant, and full of joy—and that’s exactly what they created.
Their wedding venue was filled with the classic beauty of white roses, hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums, with rich red roses scattered throughout to match Smirthi’s deep red silk sari. Her bridal look was the picture of timeless elegance: antique-style jewelry (specially handpicked by her mom in India), a sleek low bun, and bold, radiant makeup.
Smirthi was also prepared to dance the night away—literally. For her Sangeet, she wore a pair of fully beaded, custom sneakers embroidered with her and Aalap’s initials. And for the reception? Sparkling rhinestone-studded sneakers. Comfort and glam, perfectly combined.
Aalap’s groomsmen brought energy and humor to the celebration, while Smirthi’s bridesmaids and bridesman—her best friends from all stages of life—stood by her side, offering love, laughter, and the kind of support only lifelong friends can give.
